It is with much sadness that we say goodbye to a much loved and long standing member,
Lion Alan Masters.
Our condolences go to Sandra his wife, son James, daughter Sara and her family. A much loved member who worked with us all helping to serve the Buxton community. Always happy to give advice and support to our club members, we all have happy memories of the times he spent supporting the Buxton Lions. Twinning with the Chateaubriant Lions and hosting their families on their exchange visits, helping Father Christmas at his Grotto in "The Springs" centre and running the Duck Race at Carnival time. We're all going to miss you mate. The Lions are going to form a "Guard of Honour" at the Funeral Service to be held at St Peters Church, Fairfield at 1.30pm on Thursday 3rd September 2020.
As President I was born in Derby and have lived and worked in the Buxton area for many years, having moved here to take up the role of head teacher when the Buxton Community School was formed. I have been a member of the Lions Club for over 12 years and together with my wife Frances have had many happy times working and socialising in the local community. Supported by my family and friends it has given both of us the opportunity to be able to put something of real value back into the community that we live in.
So why don’t you consider joining the Lions as I did? You only have to get involved when you have the time available and you can pick those activities that interest you just as I did. These are just a few of the projects that the Lions have been involved with in recent years. Assisting as Marshalls at the Buxton Carnival; helping to run and organise the annual Duck Race held at the Pavilion Gardens after the Carnival procession; organising Santa’s Grotto supporting the Christmas Lights Switch-On event; working with the team to ensure that our “Message in a Bottle” scheme is promoted through the High Peak area and helping with the distribution of the bottles; or helping youth groups, organisations or individuals to raise money for activities to support the community.
Buxton & District Lions have raised thousands of pounds for the local community as well as performing many hours of community service. COVID-19 has brought about many lifestyle changes, but we still meet once a month using the “Zoom” software, where we plan and discuss our activities.
We are a group of local like-minded people with a social conscience. Our purpose is to help other people, especially in the local community but also those facing global challenges. We do this both through fund-raising and through practical action. We support other groups and organisations with similar aims. We enjoy each other’s company and we like doing things as a team. If you share these ideals, please join us and bring your new ideas. Women and men of all ages and backgrounds will be welcomed.
