Lion President's Message

It has been a busy couple of months for us at the club, and my thanks go to everyone handling all the administration associated with the Lions CIO registration and the Disirict re-organisation.  Buxton and District Lions Club supports many activities and projects to raise funds to assist individuals and organisations within the Buxton and District community. "The Buxton Lions Bonfire and Hog Roast" saw us all out in force selling tickets, working with our sponsors and supporters putting on a great show at the Buxton Cricket Ground.  Many thanks to the students from The Buxton Community School and Buxton College for all the help given in setting up, marshalling and cleaning up on the Sunday morning.  The Buxton Lions also organised the Father Christmas at the Pavilion Gardens Christmas Lights switch on and our thanks go to all members of the community who supported this event, it was a great success.

During December we supported a "Reverse Santa" at the Nottingham Building Society in Buxton, and held a joint collection with Morrisons at their Buxton store.  Both these events were a great success and we thank the Buxton community for their generous contributions.

The Buxton Lions remember Anne Gould and all the good times that they spent together with her husband, former Lion Ken and their family.  Happy adventures twinning with the Chateaubriant Lions, running Father Christmas in the Buxton shopping precinct, organising the Duck Race at Carnival time and many other community events.  Our thoughts and condolences go to Ken, Christine, Robert and other members of the family at this difficult time.

Last year was the LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL British Isles Centennial Celebration, an event which was promoted at Buckingham Palace on 28th Feb. 2018.  It was hosted by Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex the Patron of the Lions Clubs of the British Isles.  We were very proud that one of our members, Lion Tony Huxford our man in the river during the Duck Race on Carnival Day, was invited to attend to represent our club.  This year we are now part of the newly formed North Western Region of Lions Clubs in the UK.

Buxton & District Lions have raised thousands of pounds for local charities as well as performing many hours of community service.  Meetings are held twice a month, details in the club progamme page shown above. The 2nd Thursday of each month is a business meeting where we update each other on what we have been doing and the 4th Friday is where we all sit down with our partners to enjoy a pleasant meal at the Cavendish Golf Club.  As a member, you pay a subscription of just £5 a month to cover the administration costs, so that everything raised from our activities goes back into the local community.  So why not contact us or come and help us with some of our future events, we always need help.

I've been married to Gill for many years and our involvement with the Lions has given us many happy memories and helped us make good friends from our work in the local community. So if you are interested just send me an email and I will be pleased to take you to one of our meetings or invite you to get involved  with one of our events, so that you can see and experience what the Lions do in Buxton.

I am looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you soon.
