Local people who enjoy helping others
We are a group of local like-minded people with a social conscience.
Our purpose is to help other people, especially in the local community
but also those facing global challenges. We do this both through fund-raising and through practical action. We support other groups and organisations with similar aims. We enjoy each other’s company and we like doing things as a team.
One out of two people in the British Isles volunteer on a regular basis.
81% are engaged in supporting local communities. Two thirds of people donate financially to charities.
How do we help other people?
We give grants to local individuals in need and to groups and organisations like First Responders, Food Bank and Samaritans who need funds to maintain their wide-reaching programmes of support for local people in need or at risk. We also donate to international appeals for aid arising from natural disasters.
How do we raise funds?
We mainly do this by organising events like the annual Duck Race during the Buxton Carnival and by Christmas bucket collections. These currently bring in about £5000 each year. We are looking for additional new fund-raising activities, including digital and electronic options, to get us back to our old levels of over £10,000 a year! Local people know what we do and they always give generously.
What else do we do?
We provide practical help, for example building storage shelving for High Peak Homeless Help, volunteer driving and helping with school mock interviews. We operate the Message in a Bottle scheme. And we promote (and help fund) the increase of defibrillators in the town.
What about young people?
We work closely with local schools, support their mentoring and award programmes and try to engage young people in national Lions awards for citizenship and community leadership, and in Music and Art.
What makes us a team?
We are all local to Buxton, know the town and care about its people. We mix business with pleasure!
We meet once a month, alternating between planning meetings over a simple buffet and purely social activities, to which we also invite our own friends and Club Friends, who help out at our activities.
If you share our ideals, please join us.
We are keen to increase our numbers and to be as diverse a club as possible – with both women and men members of all ages. We welcome the new initiatives that this will bring.
